The exhilaration I felt as I walked through the streets of the city that was now my home was palpable. I had wondered if it would fade as the weeks and months passed, but each day brought something new and wonderful and I could scarcely contain my joy at the newness of it all.

My mother had not taken kindly to this sudden change in my fortunes.

She had hoped... No, she had expected that I would return to Longbourn desperate for the simple distractions that life in Hertfordshire offered.

I could read in the parlor. Sew with my sisters. Gossip with the other ladies...

But London held so much more for me.

In London I was valuable for more than just my prettiness and the accomplishments that were prized in women in search of a husband.

With my uncle's help, I was able to utilize all of the skills which my own mother had scoffed at.

And I loved every minute of it.

"Lizzy, mark my words—you shall return to Longbourn and beg for the solitude that you have abandoned! And what of your sisters?!"

Guilt had plagued me for some time, I could not deny it. But Jane's letters were reassuring in every possible way...

I opened another one of Jane's letters which she sent to keep me apprised of everything that happened beneath Longbourn's roof.

My dearest Lizzy,

As you well know, Kitty has been keeping company with a lovely young officer who has asked her to dance on several occasions and has even come to the house to walk in the gardens with her. Mama is overjoyed, Lydia is sullen, and Papa... Well, Papa keeps to his study as he always does.

He, of course, asks for news about you and how you are doing in London, and I would ask that you write to him more to tell him of your adventures, no matter how boring they might seem at the time.

I did wonder, with the approach of spring, if you would be so kind as to ask our aunt and uncle if they can bear one more guest in the house?

I long to visit you, and perhaps even see the warehouses that you now call your domain for myself!
